According to the new judicial interpretation released by the Supreme People's Court recently, people who refuse to follow court judgments will face severe financial limits, including restrictions on spending.
Laolai (court-rebels) is a term in Chinese used for anyone who, upon receiving a court order or a judgment against them in a civil case, literally ignores it.
By treating court judgments as pieces of blank paper, they have made the execution of the law extremely difficult.
They not only discredited the court, but also tainted the law itself.
In the past, media exposure is the main means to deal with laolai, since the Criminal Law doesn't have very specific rules on this matter and the media exposure cannot cover all the cases. So refusal to follow court orders has become commonplace.
The laolai are a reflection of the disappearing integrity and honesty in society.
The new rules restricting their spending will be a very effective tool to break this vicious circle.
