Don't be too cocky about China's status

The German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development announced Friday that it would stop offering financial aid to China.

Earlier this year, the UK Department for International Development also announced that it would discontinue financial aid to China in 2011.

China's rapid economic growth, huge foreign exchange reserves, successful hosting of the Beijing Olympic Games, and its offering of financial support to other countries are the main reasons that the UK and Germany are ending their financial aid to China. They believe that China has become a mid-level developed country.

More and more industrialized countries may choose to do so because of China's rapid economic growth. This shows that Western society has begun to reevaluate China's status in international society.

However, China needs to have an objective view of its own development. Being viewed as a mid-level developed country doesn't mean that China has already reached such a stage.

The unbalanced economic development of China has become a problem. Rapid economic growth doesn't necessarily bring a civil society up to the level of a mid-level developed country, especially in the areas of education, mass transportation and healthcare.

We should have a rational and mature attitude toward the new judgment of China's global status.
