Without real reform, the world is doomed to more crises

But it would be pure wishful thinking to say that after the crisis, there will be betterdiscernment of good artists and good works. No in-depth debate has yet taken place as to how to judge the real quality of art and what went wrong with China's contemporary art scene.

Another example is women's role and status, which has been applauded during the current crisis. Apparently, women are less likely to take risks, according to sociologists, and therefore would have been a better choice than men to avoid the current round of crisis and help prevent future disasters.

Let's just put aside whether it is scientifi c at all to make such a generalized statement about the biological di. Erences between men and women. The real question is: Without the right policies and systems, can women avoid the next crisis at all just because they are women?

Also, should women's role be refl ected on by society only at the time of a crisis as an alternative?

This renders invisible the progressive work done at all times in improving women's position in the world.

At a time when the economy is showing signs of recovery, it is time for thoughtful refl ection, analysis, and reform. Otherwise, Greenspan may turn out to have been a financial prophet after all.
