The threat of hunger never fades

Mentioning a food crisis usually provokes images of skinny kids languishing in countries that suffer frequent natural disasters or prolonged war.
Few Chinese would associate the term with a threat lingering in China.
Today is World Food Day, and it is worth reminding ourselves that hunger has actually never been far away.
True, it is one of the biggest achievements of New China to feed 22 percent of the world's population with 7 percent of the world's land.
Today, the headlines talk of China's foreign reserves, the largest in the world, and the global expansion of its companies, large and small. Hunger has been far from the minds of most people.
But feeding a population of 1.3 billion has never been an easy task. It is one that faces derailment if not handled with care.
Each year, the CPC Central Committee lists agriculture as the top priority in its No. 1 Document, an annual government proclamation. This affirms the important position of farm and food security in China.
