Churkin: I don’t think there is a big difference between Chinese and Russian journalists from the professional angle. We also have government media who always take the same line as the government, like your party journals. We also have some civil media representing other forces’ interest, such as oligarchs, political parties and so on.

Hiroshi Matsuno

Matsuno: The “poisoned dumpling” incident last year was just a crime, rather than a diplomatic issue. But the hostility between Chinese and Japanese people was boosted by Chinese and Japanese media. This is what Chinese and Japanese media must change.

During the May 12 earthquake last year, both Chinese and Japanese media covered it in the same fashion, and the Chinese expressed thanks to the Japanese rescue team. This is a very good example. We can make more positive reports and avoid negative information, so that we can promote Japan-China relations and reduce misunderstandings between the two peoples.
